UK Travellers to the Gulf Warned: Insurance May Be Invalid Even for Transit Passengers
UK personal and business travellers heading to, and within the Gulf region are being warned that their travel insurance may be invalid under current conditions; not only for those living or working there, but also for those simply passing through.
Since the start of the current conflict involving Iran, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has advised against all but essential travel to parts of the Middle East, including the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, and parts of Saudi Arabia, including Riyadh.
This has significant implications for insurance cover.
Most UK travel insurance policies contain clauses that invalidate cover if a traveller goes against official government advice. This means that individuals travelling for business, relocating for work, or even taking a holiday are likely to find themselves uninsured.
Crucially, this risk also extends to passengers who are only transiting through the region. Many travellers assume that a short stopover, for example, changing planes in Dubai or Doha, does not carry the same insurance implications. However, insurers typically apply the same rules regardless of the duration of stay. If the destination or transit point falls under FCDO restrictions, cover may be reduced or completely void.
For business travellers, this creates additional exposure. Employers may assume staff are covered under corporate policies, but these often mirror the same exclusions. In the event of disruption, medical emergency, or evacuation, costs could fall directly on the individual or the company.
Travellers and businesses are therefore strongly advised to review their insurance policies carefully and check the latest guidance before travelling. Where travel is essential, specialist insurance or explicit written confirmation of cover may be required.
In the current environment, assumptions around “standard cover” can no longer be relied upon; even for those simply passing through the region.
